Dignity Drive

The Dignity Drive by SOSNPO empowered young girls by addressing period poverty, distributing dignity packs, and fostering menstrual health awareness….

Problem

In South Africa,7 million girls are reported to be absent from school each month due to lack of sanitary pads. According to a study conducted by Stellenbosch University, 30% of young girls in South Africa are affected by period poverty. Many young girls and women are forced to use substitutes like dirty rags, leaves, sand, grass and other unsuitable material leaves women more susceptible to infection and disease.

Solution

For National Women’s Day, SOSNPO hosted a dignity drive, which welcomed female health care professionals to do a menstruation healthy management talk at Masibambane High School. In addition, each girl received a dignity pack consisting of a flannel, pads, deodorant and underwear. The City of Cape Town also gave a health talk which included the proper disposal of sanitary wear.

Outcome

Money raised from donations for this initiative went towards the S.H.E project (Sanitation, Health and Education), which aims to empower females by investing in communities. The educational talk ensured that girls knew how to properly dispose of menstruation products, and learnt about appropriate hygiene practices during their period.
