- The Problem
47% of people living in South Africa lack access to basic handwashing facilities.960% of South Africans do not wash their hands properly after using the toilet and 66% do not wash their hands with soap10. According to UNICEF, an estimated 2 million households in South Africa do not have access to handwashing facilities. 11Children exhibit poor hygiene habits, due to a lack of access to handwashing facilities and boredom associated with the task.
- The Solution
Inspired by children’s inquisitive nature, ‘Get Your Hands Dirty’ encouraged experiential learning amongst the Grade R pupils of Cavalleria Primary School through an interactive mud search and hand painting activities. The event welcomed members from the City of Cape Town who gave an educational health puppet show and handwashing demonstration for the students. To address the shortage of hand hygiene products within informal communities, the initiative provided handwash kits to 100 children.
- The Outcome
Clean hands and healthy habits. The initiative ensured the youth gained access to essential wash items and further improved the hygiene behaviour of children in impoverished areas. The initiative further encouraged greater prioritisation of education for hand hygiene amongst school educators.
